Experiment with different shutter speeds to see what works best for different scenarios. Photography can help you get that split-second moment or to blur those large time periods. Using a fast shutter speed can help you catch moving objects, while the slower speed can help you get those natural scenes.
If you are starting off on your travels, take your first shots as soon as you depart. Don’t limit yourself to the actual location, but look for unique and interesting things as soon as you begin your journey. Every step along the way, you may find some great opportunities to take photos. From the airports to the hotels, you can snap some unique shots anywhere.
Keep things simple when trying for a great shot. You don’t need to mess with a bunch of different color and motion settings to produce a beautiful photograph.
Overcast Sky
If you are intrigued by the nostalgic quality of photography captured by traditional film, consider picking up a manual camera from your local thrift shop. Use black-and-white film that has an ISO value of 200 for dramatic photographs. When you develop the pictures, consider using old fashioned papers as well. Fiber-based papers are good.
Avoid capturing an overcast sky in your photos. Leaving too much of the gray sky in your photograph might make the whole shot look too muted and lacking in contrast. However, if you are shooting in black and white, an overcast sky can make a beautiful photo. If the day is not overcast, you can show as much of the sky as you want to, but make sure you are attentive to the lighting.
While holding onto the camera, your arms should be closely beside the body. Hands should be beside and under the camera. This helps prevent blurry photographs by keeping the movement of your camera to a minimum. With your hands positioned at the underside of the camera and below the lens, it will help prevent accidentally dropping the equipment.
Watch natural lighting! Early morning light or late afternoon glows are best for taking photos outdoors. A high sun will cast shadows, or cause your subject to squint. The sun should be hitting just one side of your subject.
Capture the smaller things when traveling with your camera. Although they may not seem to matter much at the time, they can help you vividly remember your journey when you think back about it. Taking photos of things such as street signs, storefronts and other interesting objects will help trigger memories you would have forgotten otherwise.
Taking Pictures
Your image sensor settings (ISO) can help you get very good shots if you know how to work with them. If not, they can sabotage your pictures quickly. Turning your camera’s ISO high increases the amount of grain you will see in your photos. This can ruin your pictures unless you are planning on having that look.
Practice taking pictures of people. It’s important and often legal that you gain permission before taking someone’s picture. Taking pictures when you are traveling makes for great memories later, even if the pictures don’t stand out, they may trigger important memories for you. Try to get a candid expression with casual clothing.
Get as close to your subject as possible. It’s frustrating for the viewer to not clearly see the details of the subject because the camera was too far away. Make it easy for yourself and your viewers to see a subject clear and vividly.
Be creative and experiment with the speed of your camera’s shutter. It is standard practice to use the fastest possible shutter speed to freeze action, but think of what you could do with a slow shutter speed, such as 1/30. Take that cyclist riding past for example. The resulting image will portray the cyclist in sharp outline, but the background will appear streaked, as in motion.
